Balea Lake and the Transfagarasan Road
A glacial lake at the summit of the Transfagarasan — Top Gear's 'world's best road' — with hiking or sledging depending on season.
Overview
Balea Lake sits at over 2,000 metres at the top of the Transfagarasan, one of the most dramatic mountain roads in Europe, its hairpins climbing through the Fagaras range to a stark, high-altitude lake. The drive itself is as much the experience as the destination.
For CRJ, this is a signature mountain-day inclusion — best timed to the road's open season and paired with a Carpathian or Transylvania route rather than treated as a stand-alone excursion.
Why Visit
One of Europe's most celebrated mountain drives, with genuine high-alpine scenery at the top.
A strong seasonal centrepiece for a Carpathian mountain day.
Best for
- scenery
- road trips
- mountain journeys

Practical notes
- The high section of the road typically closes in winter (roughly late October to June, weather-dependent) — timing needs checking before building a route around it.
- Weather at altitude changes quickly even in summer; layers are worth carrying regardless of the valley forecast.
Getting there
Best approached as a loop or through-drive rather than a there-and-back; a private driver is strongly preferable to self-drive given the hairpins and altitude.
Best time to visit
July-September gives the most reliable full-road access; late June and early October can still be open but are weather-dependent.
