Cotnari Wine Region

One of Romania's oldest and most renowned wine-growing areas, historically favoured by the princes of Moldavia.

Overview

Cotnari, north of Iași, has been documented as a wine-growing area since the 15th century and was long favoured by the ruling princes of Moldavia. It is best known for Grasă de Cotnari, a distinctive sweet white variety grown on the area's gentle limestone hills.

The rolling vineyard landscape, quite different from the mountains further west in the region, gives a good sense of Moldavia's agricultural character.
