Rodna Mountains National Park

Romania's largest protected mountain area and a UNESCO biosphere reserve, home to the Eastern Carpathians' highest peak and its only glacial lakes.

The Rodna Mountains rising above forested valleys in Maramureș

Overview

The Rodna Mountains rise along the northern edge of Maramureș, straddling the border with Bistrița-Năsăud county. Pietrosul Rodnei, at 2,303 metres, is the highest summit in the entire Eastern Carpathians, and its glacial cirques hold some of the only glacial lakes in the Eastern Carpathians, including Lala Mare and Iezer.

Protected as Rodna Mountains National Park since 1990 and recognised as a UNESCO Man and Biosphere reserve, the range is one of the largest protected areas in the Romanian Carpathians, its slopes forested with beech and spruce below a rocky, open alpine ridge.

Why Visit

A genuine high-mountain contrast to Maramureș's wooden churches and valley villages, with some of the wildest, least-visited terrain in the Eastern Carpathians.

Best for

  • hikers
  • travellers wanting genuine wilderness

Practical notes

  • Routes to Pietrosul and the glacial lakes are long, exposed mountain days; we match the route to fitness and weather rather than defaulting to the summit.

Getting there

Access is from Borșa, in northern Maramureș, at the eastern end of the wooden-church valleys.

Best time to visit

July to September for the high routes; snow can linger into June on the ridge.
