Bigăr Waterfall

A striking, unusually shaped waterfall in the Anina Mountains, once widely shared online as one of the world's most unusual falls.

Green moss on rocks beside a waterfall

Overview

Bigăr Waterfall became internationally known after photographs showed water spreading in an even, mushroom-like sheet over moss-covered rock, a formation caused by a limestone ledge where the Bigăr stream meets the Minișul Mare river.

In June 2021, part of the moss-and-travertine rock face collapsed under its own accumulated weight, a natural process, and the waterfall's spread is less perfectly even than in its most famous photographs. It is regenerating over time and remains a genuinely striking and photogenic sight in a peaceful forest setting.
