Semenic-Cheile Carașului National Park
A forested mountain plateau above Reșița, with wide views, cross-country ski trails in winter, and the large Comarnic show cave.
Overview
The Semenic Mountains form a rounded, heavily forested plateau above Reșița, protected as part of the Semenic-Cheile Carașului National Park. In winter the plateau is a modest cross-country skiing area; in summer it offers open ridgeline walks with wide views over the Banat mountains.
Within the park, Comarnic Cave is one of the larger show caves in the region, with chambers, stalactite formations, and an underground stream.
The park also protects Izvoarele Nerei, Romania's largest virgin forest at roughly 50 square kilometres and one of the largest virgin beech forests in Europe, added in 2017 to the transboundary UNESCO World Heritage Site for the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians. It is part of the wider picture of Romania holding roughly two-thirds of Europe's remaining virgin and old-growth forest, the largest share within the EU, rather than the continent's single "last" virgin forest, as is sometimes claimed.
Why Visit
A quieter, less-visited mountain landscape than the Carpathians further east, easily combined with the Banat's gorges and waterfalls.
