The Carpathians Across Romania
The Carpathians aren't a single region here — they run through six of them, each with a genuinely different character. For next steps, review Carpathian Walking & Wildlife (8 days), or send a trip enquiry with the stays you have in mind.
Why there's no single Carpathians region
The Carpathian Mountains form a huge semicircle across Romania, split geographically into Eastern, Southern, and Western groups, and they cut through six of our eight regions rather than sitting inside one. Rather than one generic mountain page, each region below covers its own genuinely distinct stretch of the range — different subrange, different scenery, different logistics.
For the country-wide picture, read our Carpathian Mountains guide or the wider Romania: Carpathian Garden guide.
Find your stretch of the Carpathians
Transylvania
Southern Carpathians: Balea Lake and the Transfăgărășan in the Făgăraș range, and Piatra Craiului's limestone ridge.
Muntenia
Southern Carpathians: the Bucegi Mountains' plateau, reached by cable car above the Prahova Valley.
Banat & Crișana
Western Carpathians: the Banat Mountains' gorges, Bigăr Waterfall, and Izvoarele Nerei's virgin forest.
Moldova
Eastern Carpathians: the Ceahlău massif and the Bicaz Gorges, treated by folklore as sacred ground.
Maramureș
Eastern Carpathians: the Rodna Mountains, home to the range's highest peak and its only glacial lakes.
Oltenia
Southern Carpathians: the Parâng Mountains and the Transalpina, Romania's highest paved road.
Planning across more than one range
Many journeys combine two or three of these areas rather than one: a Transylvania base with a Bucegi or Piatra Craiului day, or a Banat loop paired with Timișoara and Oradea. Tell us which regions you're already planning and we'll suggest the mountain stop that fits naturally, rather than adding a detour for its own sake.
Mountain conditions vary by altitude and season regardless of which range you choose: layers matter more than technical gear, and we brief every route for realistic pacing and, where relevant, bear-country etiquette.
Plan with confidence
After your enquiry, we prepare a bespoke draft itinerary with the right pace, stays, and logistics for whichever range fits your route. You review every detail with Clara’s team before anything is confirmed.
No rushed decisions, no template plans - just calm, specialist guidance from a UK-based Romania team.
