Oltenia
Western Wallachia's quieter half: Brâncuși's sculptures at Târgu Jiu, UNESCO-listed monasteries, and the Danube's dramatic Iron Gates. For next steps, send a trip enquiry with the stays and pace you have in mind.
In a nutshell
Oltenia covers Dolj, Gorj, Vâlcea, and Mehedinți counties in south-western Romania: a mix of major monasteries, one of the 20th century's most important sculpture ensembles, and the Danube's dramatic Iron Gates gorge.
Best time to go
April-October for monasteries, caves, and the Danube gorge; the Brâncuși ensemble and museums work year-round.
Signature experiences
- Brâncuși at Târgu Jiu
- Horezu & the Olt valley monasteries
- Danube Iron Gates
- Gorj caves & gorges
Practicalities
Craiova has its own airport; sites are spread across four counties, so we pair this region with a driver.
Quieter than the castle circuit
Oltenia trades fortified towns for monasteries, caves, and one of the 20th century's great sculpture ensembles - a different, less-visited side of Romania.

Why go
Oltenia rewards travellers who want depth over a checklist: Constantin Brâncuși's sculptural ensemble at Târgu Jiu is a genuine landmark of modern art, Horezu Monastery is Romania's finest Brâncovenesc building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Danube's Iron Gates deliver some of the country's most dramatic river scenery. It is one of Romania's least crowded historic regions.
What you'll experience
Modern art in an old landscape
Brâncuși's Endless Column, Gate of the Kiss, and Table of Silence, freely viewable in a provincial park.
A dense monastery route
Horezu, Cozia, and Tismana each offer a different setting and story, from UNESCO architecture to Wallachia's oldest foundation.
The Danube's Iron Gates
Cazanele Dunării's gorge scenery, Roman ruins at Drobeta-Turnu Severin, and the Iron Gates I Dam.
The Carpathians in Oltenia
Oltenia's Gorj county climbs into the Parâng Mountains, crossed by the Transalpina, Romania's highest paved road, a high-altitude contrast to the region's monasteries and Danube scenery.
Food & Cuisine in Oltenia
Romania's spiciest regional table — stuffed peppers, cured sausages, and carp soup with real heat. See the cross-region Food & Markets guide for how this fits a wider culinary route.
A calm 5-7 day plan
Oltenia spreads across four counties, so we usually plan it as a loop with two or three bases rather than one fixed stay.
- Days 1-2: Gorj - the Brâncuși ensemble in Târgu Jiu, Tismana Monastery, and, for hikers, the Jiu Gorge or Muierii Cave.
- Days 3-4: Vâlcea - Horezu Monastery and its pottery workshops, Polovragi, and the Olt valley towns of Călimănești-Căciulata and Cozia Monastery.
- Days 5-7: Mehedinți - Drobeta-Turnu Severin's Roman ruins, then Cazanele Dunării and the Iron Gates I Dam for a Danube finish.
On a shorter trip, we focus on either the Gorj/Vâlcea monastery-and-art route or the Danube side rather than the full loop.
A four-county loop
Sites are spread across Dolj, Gorj, Vâlcea, and Mehedinți, so we plan a realistic loop with a driver rather than long backtracking.

Practical notes
- Season: April-October is easiest for monasteries, caves, and the Danube gorge; the Brâncuși ensemble and museums work year-round.
- Gateway: Craiova has its own airport; the region is also reachable by road from Bucharest or Sibiu.
- Driving: sites are spread across four counties; we pair this region with a driver rather than self-drive.
- Monasteries: we choose two or three rather than all of them, to avoid monastery fatigue.
- Pairing: combine with the Transylvania route via the Olt valley or Jiu Gorge, or continue toward the Danube Delta along the river.
Frequently asked planning questions
Is Oltenia worth visiting if we've already done Transylvania?
Yes - the character is quite different. Oltenia has fewer fortified towns and more monasteries, sculpture, and Danube scenery, so it doesn't feel repetitive even after a Transylvania-focused trip.
How many monasteries should we actually visit?
Two or three, chosen for variety rather than all of them. Horezu for UNESCO-listed architecture, plus either Cozia or Tismana for a different setting, usually covers the highlights without monastery fatigue.
Can Oltenia be combined with a Danube Delta or Transylvania route?
Yes to both. Drobeta-Turnu Severin and Cazanele Dunării connect naturally toward the Danube Delta side, while the Olt valley and Jiu Gorge connect north toward Transylvania and Sibiu.
